Q&A w/ Skins First-Round Pick Brian Orakpo

After being selected by Washington with the 13th overall pick, former Texas DE Brian Orakpo said the Redskins are the perfect fit for him. In an interview with Sporting News’ Bill Eichenberger and other reporters, Orakpo also said he’s looking forward to competing in the physical NFC East—including two games each year against his home-state Cowboys—and playing on the same line with Albert Haynesworth.

Q: What was your reaction when you were chosen by the Redskins?
A: I’m just ready to come in and help the team in any way I can, and most importantly, help the team win.

Q: Did it cross your mind that the Redskins might be interested in you when they released defensive end Jason Taylor?
A: I admire Jason Taylor so much. He was a huge role model for me. I felt like there might be an opportunity for me when he left.

Q: Are you a little disappointed that you dropped out of the Top 10 in the draft?
A: I’m actually more excited. I’m in a great place, a great city, with great ownership, a great coaching staff … Coach (Jim) Zorn and company. I don’t care about making more money. I just want to win. This is just a great fit for me.

Q: How exciting is it to come into the NFC East, perhaps the most competitive and physical division in the NFL?
A: It’s a testament to my career at Texas. We played in one of the most competitive leagues in college football and had a great game each and every Saturday. That sets me apart from everybody else because we played top competition and great bowl games all the time.

Q: Being a Texas guy, what’s it going to be like playing twice a year against the Cowboys?
A: Oh, man. That is going to be amazing. I get to play a Texas team and hopefully put it on them.

Q: What about those other rivalry games against Philadelphia and New York?

A: When those games would come on, you would just see the fire that guys would play with, the intensity. They were like our Oklahoma games or our Texas A&M games.

Q: So you won’t take it personally when you get booed in Philly?
A: Oh no. I’ve been booed everywhere I go on the road. So I’m used to it. That just means I’m doing something right.

Q: Are you excited about the opportunity to play alongside All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth?

A: Having a force like that in the middle makes my job a lot easier. I was very fortunate to play with a lot of great defensive tackles at Texas. And having one of the greatest defensive tackles in the league with the Redskins will make it a lot easier for me to put pressure on the quarterback.

Q: What about that huge watch on your wrist? What’s the story with that?
A: It’s funny because ( draft expert and former Cowboys personnel guru) Mr. Gil Brandt was making fun of my watches. He said I have an alarm clock on my wrist. I just wear what I like.

Q: So what kind is it?

A: I don’t know—some kind of black diamond watch.
