Orakpo Talks to the Media After the Draft

Nfl Draft Football
(on Washington Media): “I’m just ready for the opportunity. I’m ready to come in, step in, and do what I can and help the team. And the most important thing, ready to win.”

(on the hole created by Jason Taylor’s departure): “I admire Jason Taylor so much you know he was a huge role model in my life watching him play. When he left, I felt like that was an opportunity for me and a perfect fit, and look where I’m at, I’m a Washington Redskin now, so it’s just a dream come true for myself.”

(on dropping to No. 13): “I’m actually more excited, you know I’m in a great place, great city, great ownership, great coaching staff, coach Zorn and company. It’s just a perfect opportunity for myself. I don’t care about making more money, I just want to win. I want to be in a perfect situation and this is just a great fit for me.”

(on talking to Mr. Snyder): “I talked to him earlier. He was one of the first guys to call me and just congratulate me and they are so excited down there in Washington for me right now.”

(on playing Cowboys twice a year): “That’s going to be amazing. That’s going to be great. You know I get to play a Texas team. Hopefully put it on them.”

(on playing the most competitive division in the NFL): “It’s a testament to my career at Texas. We played in the most competitive leagues in college football. I had a great game each and every Saturday. So that sets me apart from everybody else because we play top competition and we have great bowl games all the time and I can just mention my career to the NFL with that.”

(on Washington rivalry with Dallas being from Texas): “Every time those games would come on you could just see the fire that the players play with, the intensity because that was like our Oklahoma game what they’re playing, our Texas A&M games. Rivalry games are just so important and so good for the game of football that you go out there and you want to give it your all for your fans and your teammates and for everybody that’s a part of that team.”

(on taking fan reaction in rival city personally): “Oh, no. I’ve been booed everywhere I go on the road so I’m used to it. I’ll just be so excited because it means I’m doing something right.”

(on being in Washington to assist with youth education): “Oh, I’m very excited. Like you said, I graduated in youth and community studies. It kind of gives me a chance to help children. We had a great time helping the children, playing with them, out here in New York. It’s just phenomenal because I love community service so much that I did it at Texas for the little kids in hospitals that are having any problems with stuff they can’t control. I want to continue that when I get down to Washington…It was a wonderful experience at the hospital visit in New York. I had a great time. It was fun. I love kids. I love the smiles on their faces. It reminds me of when I was young.”

(on four of the top 13 picks being from Texas): “Texas is the state where it produces. We have the best talent – that’s why we are the Lone Star State. It’s just a testament to myself, Smith, and Stafford, Crabtree – the rest of these guys are really doing what they have to do to be successful.”

(on Jason Smith): “They are getting a great leader in him. A great leader and a physical guy that really understands the game of football. I’m just so excited for him. Me and him have become good friends through this whole process and if we get the opportunity to go against each other they’ll finally see the Smith-Orakpo battle that everybody’s been waiting to see. I’m just so excited just to finally know what team I’m on and get things started.”
