Reinstating the Draft

With the 13th overall pick in the upcoming draft, speculation and rumors about who the Redskins will chose have began to make their rounds. Will it be the explosive defensive end out of Texas? Maybe the Redskins will continue to shore up the O-line and go after the young offensive tackle from Alabama. Or just for the purpose of disturbing the peace, (like drafting a punter last year) taking the quarterback from USC.

Each theory is intriguing and holds substance but to predict what a team will do with its first round draft pick, one must reflect on what the team has done in the past with its first round selection.

Washington Redskins first round activity from previous 5 drafts:

* 2004 Draft- Free Safety, Sean Taylor (5th overall)
* 2005 Draft- Cornerback, Carlos Rogers (9th overall), Quarterback, Jason Campbell (25th overall)
* 2006 Draft- Traded Pick to Denver
* 2007 Draft- Safety, Laron Landry (6th overall)
* 2008 Draft- Traded Pick to Atlanta

Except for one half of 2005, all first round draftees have been either traded away or on the defensive side of the football. History often repeats itself so by having only 5 total picks in the upcoming draft, look for the Redskins to trade away their first round choice in a move aimed at acquiring more selections in later rounds. If not, the defense should make room for a new teammate. [see Brian Cushing, USC]
