Fantasy Matchups for Sunday’s Skins-Lions Game

Redskins RB Clinton Portis vs. Lions run defense

The Lions have done a decent job against the run at times this year, but they still rank second worst in rush defense. The Redskins rank third in rushing, with Portis carrying the ball a ton. He has 163 carries for 818 yards and seven touchdowns. The Lions must be disciplined in their gaps and gang-tackle Portis when they get a chance.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson vs. Redskins CB Carlos Rogers

Usually it’s Shawn Springs who handles assignments against big receivers like Johnson (6-foot-5, 239 pounds), but a calf injury will keep Springs out of the lineup for the fourth time in eight games this season. Rogers is having an excellent season, often going against the opponents’ best receiver, with safety LaRon Landry often shading to that side. Rogers has contained receivers like the Dallas Cowboys’ Terrell Owens, Philadelphia Eagles’ DeSean Jackson and the Cleveland Browns’ Braylon Edwards to some degree. Johnson hasn’t caught more than four passes in a game since Week 2. He caught only two passes Sunday at the Houston Texans, although he had 154 yards receiving and a touchdown. Without receiver Roy Williams on the other side, teams have an easier time concentrating on Johnson.

Redskins WR Santana Moss vs. Lions secondary

The Detroit defense is a mess as a whole. One area to exploit: The Lions’ defensive backs, specifically corners Travis Fisher and Leigh Bodden. The Lions are 31st in passing yards allowed (251.2), last in passing yards per play (13.5) and 31st in interception rate (one in 172 attempts). Moss was back on track last week against Cleveland. After making only two catches in the previous two games, he caught four passes for 75 yards (including an 18-yard touchdown) versus the Browns. He was quarterback Jason Campbell’s intended target seven times. Moss’ 518 receiving yards rank seventh in the NFL.
