Taking a Look at the Options for the Skins

With Daniel Snyder leading the search, there are already plenty of names popping up on the list for the Redskins when it comes to who will be their next head coach. While some are still insisting that former Steelers coach Bill Cowher will get a call and a long look, various sources say don’t hold your breath, as Cowher is as happy as a clam doing TV on the weekends for CBS and being home with the wife and kids during the week.

So where does that leave the Skins? Of course you already have two solid in house options in Gregg Williams and Al Saunders, but on the surface I wouldn’t be too shocked to see Snyder look out of the box to find the next man to lead the Redskins. ESPN’s John Clayton has already thrown out six names, as they are as follows with a little thought on each one next to them:

Jason Garrett – Cowboys offensive coordinator continues to be the hot name on the market when it comes to assistants, but as stated earlier, who will Garrett do when he doesn’t have Tony Romo or Terrell Owens? Snyder would love to stick it to Jerry Jones by taking Garrett away and adding him to his sideline though.

Brian Billick – He’s won a Super Bowl, is a players coach, and may be able to tweak the Skins offense enough to make it better in 2008. He may actually be a good fit for a franchise that would like to add a veteran name coach over an assistant.

Jim Caldwell – This Colts assistant coach seems to be the front runner in Atlanta for their head coaching spot. Has a great effect on teams he’s involved with due to his time around Tony Dungy. No reason to believe he would need a lot of time before he could mold the Skins into an even better team.

Russ Grimm – A fan favorite in DC with the “Hogs,” many think he should have gotten the job in Pittsburgh last season. Did the right thing by leaving there and expanding his resume in Arizona. Could be the popular choice with the fans with his playing background with the team.

Mike Singletary – No question that this Hall of Fame player is going to be a coach somewhere in the next 1-2 years. Continues to get talked about as a guy that could be a very good head coach, now just needs the shot to do it. I can see him being a big impact coach somewhere by 2009.

Rex Ryan – Looks like he may wind up staying with the Ravens, as Clayton says the Birds players want him and he did have a good interview over the weekend. If they go in a different direction in Baltimore, Snyder and the team should at least give him a look.
