Gibbs Hoping Portis Will Be Ready Saturday vs Tennessee

The Skins are taking extra care of running back Clinton Portis as they get set for thePortis preseason as well as the regular season.  Coach Joe Gibbs said Saturday that a MRI on Portis showed only tendinitis, which the team was aware of from a previous exam.  Gibbs said that Portis would have played if the team was already in the regular season, and not a meaningless scrimmage, but as of right now there is no timetable for him to be back on the field.

The injury woes for Portis are nothing new, as last year he missed time with shoulder and hand injuries.  He was not involved in any offseason activities due to the knee that is now keeping him off the field since Monday.  For now, Portis will be checked out on a daily basis, and Gibbs said there is a chance he could be on the field for the teams real preseason opener in Tennessee on Saturday.  “I have every confidence that had that been a game today, he would have played,” Gibbs said after the scrimmage “And I think he feels that way. But at the same time if there’s a chance for us to get that calmed down, we’re going to do that.”

With a still somewhat green quarterback taking the snaps this year in Jason Campbell, the Skins need Portis to be as close to 100 percent as he can be.  Playing in just 8 games last season, Portis ran for 523 yards on 127 carries with 7 touchdowns.  The team has been looking forward to having him on the field for most if not all of the 2007 season.  Two seasons ago as the team made the playoffs, Portis ran for 1516 yards and 11 TD’s.  It’s those numbers the team once again wants to see, and those are the types of numbers that will put the Skins in the thick of things in the NFC East.  Without Portis, the Skins are going to be lucky to be around .500.
