Skins Would Be Wise Not to Move Brunell

CampbellGranted the Washington Redskins are committed to putting quarterback Jason Campbell under center this season as the starter and see what he can do to generate some offense, but let’s not be so quick to ship off Mark Brunell. The veteran QB’s name came up on Tuesday in a paper in Atlanta as a possible replacement for Michael Vick, who is sure not to see the field in 2007 after the whole dog fighting scandal. Brunell has some history with Bill Musgrave, who was with the Skins and now is the QB coach with the Falcons. Brunell had his best year ever with Musgrave coaching him, as he had 23 TD passes with the Skins the year he was in Washington.

Nevertheless, with Campbell still learning and growing, now is not the time to be sending Brunell off just for what promises to be a mid-round draft pick. Campbell will be entering his first full season as a starter, and with it he needs a solid veteran presence behind him not only to help him see the game better, but possibly to step in if he fails. Last season Campbell didn’t exactly light the league on fire with his play, as he went 110-for-207 for 1297 yards, 10 TD’s and 6 INT’s. He was 2-5 as the teams starter, and while he showed some fire in a 16-10 win over the Saints, he also looked lost in losses to the Bucs, Falcons and Eagles.

There is more than enough room on the Skins 2007 roster for both Campbell and Brunell. The 13 years of experience that Mark brings to the table cannot be quickly replaced, and though he has seen better days, there is no reason to jump the gun on making a move just because you have committed to Jason. What if Campbell gets hurt? Are you comfortable with Todd Collins or Casey Bramlet? I’m not either. So unless the Falcons would part with a first or second round draft choice for Brunell (trust me, they won’t), I wouldn’t touch this position.
